Message from the founder…….
On a business trip back in 2007, I had a chance to visit a small monument dedicated to one of my heroes who enlisted in the armed services and later sacrificed his life for America’s freedom. As a collegiate athlete, he wore #42. While standing at the monument, my phone rang. To my surprise, it was my mother calling to inform me that she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer and would soon begin aggressive chemotherapy.
After we spoke, I felt every type of emotion and feared I would lose another one of my heroes. In a moment of clarity, I resolved to not just sit back but to do something. There had to be something I could do to honor people like my mother and so many other courageous people in our nation. Shortly thereafter, I crafted “42 in 42” as a collaboration of 42 service projects over a 42 day period. For six weeks (42 days) each spring, volunteers throughout America unite to honor heroes, causes and organizations that strengthen individuals and promote positive change. Volunteers throughout America immediately embraced 42 in 42 as a unique and impactful service campaign.
Now after two years of a successful initiative, several thousand volunteers have donated more than 15,000 hours of personal time and have raised over $200,000 for various charities supported through the campaign. While these volunteers are varied in their choice of projects, they are united in passion to create the change they wish to see in their world.
Our vision moving forward is to continue turning ideas into actions that will enhance the lives of those around us. As we lose ourselves in serving others we will find greater meaning in our own lives. Our actions will reflect the positive change we want to see in our world. My hope is that our combined efforts will create a movement that will eventually touch the lives of millions!
Get out there and do something to make a difference! Good luck!
